5k Training — W5D1

This morning started my 5th week of running. It’s amazing just how far I’ve come in my running in just a short period of time. I recorded my 14th run today. That means 14 runs ago I couldn’t keep a steady pace for a minute without getting winded. Now I can put feet to pavement for a good 9 minutes before I start to feel fatigued. One thing that I do have to mention is that my speed is extremely slow right now. When people vision runners they think of marathoners that can do 4-5 minute miles. I’m working on a 13 and a half minute mile. Right now if I get anything under 14 I’m feeling extremely fast. If I remember correctly in high school I passed the mile timed run in something like 15 minutes by walking most of it.

Anyway, my point is that my training program is working. A lot of people use the cliche phrase of “trust the process” when it comes to working out. It’s something that is as true as it is cliche. I trust the fact that this training program works. I trust the fact that when I finish my runs for the week that I’m ready for the next week’s run. As I wrote that just now I thought of a scene from the movie Julie & Julia:

I love that after a day when nothing is sure and when I say “nothing” i mean nothing, you can come home and absolutely know that if you add egg yolks to chocolate and sugar and milk it will get thick. It’s such a comfort.

Julie Powell

Chocolate and eggs of course really have nothing to do with running, but it’s the key words “absolutely know” and “comfort” that popped into my head.

It’s funny how this process amazes me just as it did the first time around. The second time around though I know I already have done these runs. I know that it works. In a world where confidence can wax and wain, running like this makes it so it isn’t a question.

This week I’m going to try to work on my nutrition more. I’ve been running for 5 weeks now and haven’t really been losing much weight so I really need to focus. Also I’m going to run 4 times instead of 3 and try to workout every day possible as well.

Now off to make myself a late breakfast and get on with my day!
